The impetus for
forming the San Jose Chapter came with
the formation of a new San Jose Diocese
which was formally part of the
Archdiocese of San Francisco. The
precedent had already been set when the
Oakland Diocese split off from the
Archdiocese and Oakland Diocese Chapter
was formed to include councils in the
new diocese.
On the 8th
of October 1981, an informal meeting of
the ne chapter was held at the Bishop
ODowd Council Hall under the
chairmanship of Nestor V. Barber. PSD,
then District Deputy for district 21.
The purpose of this
meeting was threefold: 1.) to discuss
and formulate a resolution for
establishing a new chapter in the
Diocese of San Jose; 2.) to establish
the proper procedure for councils to
withdraw from St. Francis Chapter and
apply for the new chapter; and 3.) to
petition California State Knights of
Columbus, and the Supreme Council to
sanction and charter a new chapter in
support of the new diocese.
Present at that
meeting were: Chairman Nestor Barber,
PSD, Harvey Weybrew of the John N.
Neumann Council #6965, Father Joseph
Geary of mission Santa Clara Council
#3523, Frank Simon, PSD, Tom Tompson of
St. Francis of Assisi Council #4891,
William Winter of Bishop ODowd Council
#3474, Donald Negt of Milpitas Council
#5796, members of San Jose Council #879
and St. Lawrence the Martyr Council
#5277. Four councils were not present:
Our Lady of Fatima Council #3436, St.
Sebastian Council #4926, Gilroy Council
#2469, and Palo Alto Council #2677.
On October 10th,
1981 Committee Chairman Nes Barber, PSD,
sent two booklets of resolutions and
petitions from the afore mentioned ten
councils, and a letter to State Deputy,
Cass Hare, requesting a new chapter be
chartered for the new Diocese of San
Jose. The letter stated that Bishop Du
Maine had been contacted and he
requested a letter form the State Deputy
confirming that proper procedure had
been followed.
A second meeting
was held on November 23rd,
1981 at Bishop ODowd council hall to
discuss the resolutions and petitions,
letters to the Bishop and State Deputy,
by-laws etc.
State Deputy Cass
Hare (1981-82) did not act on the
petition and passed it on to his
successor, State Deputy, Ray Watson
(1982-83). State Deputy Watson contacted
Bishop Du Maine, and in a meeting with
him, found out that the Bishop had no
objection to the formation of a chapter
in his diocese. He then approved the new
chapter and sent the paper work to
Supreme during the second half of his
term. Supreme approved the new chapter
during the first half of the term of
State Deputy Victor Luke (1983-84)
Since the San Jose
Chapter was established, nine new
councils have been added. These are:St.
Maria Goretti #8133, Morgan Hill #8265,
