Brother Knight, Bishop Salvatore Joseph Cordileone Installed as Forth Bishop of the Diocese of Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. – May 5, 2009 (See Pictures)

In the formal Rite of Installation at the

Cathedral of Christ the Light today, the Fourth Bishop of Oakland, Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone began his service as spiritual leader of the East Bay’s 550,000 Catholics.

Bishop Cordileone previously served as Auxiliary Bishop in San Diego until his

March 23, 2009 appointment as Bishop of Oakland by Pope Benedict XVI.

In a centuries-old ceremony at noon today in the cathedral Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, read the Papal letter announcing Bishop Cordileone’s appointment and then seated him in the formal chair (cathedra) as the

Bishop of Oakland.

“I am grateful to the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, as well as humbled and

honored, for the trust he has placed in me in naming me the Fourth Bishop of Oakland,” said Bishop Cordileone. “I ask for your prayers especially at this time, that I prove myself to be worthy of this trust.”

In addition to Archbishop Sambi, Bishop McGrath, Bishop of San Jose, and 23 other U.S. bishops gathered to witness Bishop

Cordileone’s installation. These Catholic leaders included Cardinal Roger Mahony from Los Angeles, San Francisco Archbishop George Niederauer and the Second and Third Bishops of Oakland, respectively, Bishop John Cummins and Archbishop Allen Vigneron.

The Diocese of Oakland was created in 1962, encompassing Alameda and Contra

Costa counties. The Diocese is comprised of 84 parishes and is also home to 11 pastoral centers, four specialized service centers, two homes for the aged, five specialized homes, nine high schools and 45 elementary schools. The schools enrolled over 18,000 students in 2008.

The Catholic Church is also the largest private provider of social services across Alameda and Contra Costa counties, offering shelter, meals, counseling, education, health care and other critical services free of charge to over 400,000 people of all faiths each year.

The Knights of Columbus receives an appreciation award at the May 9th, Spring Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies.

There were several councils that showed up to volunteer their time for this special event. Kurt Hogan, Council 9718 presented, the Special Olympics Committee, a check for $1,500 from a fund raiser the council held.

The Special Olympics Silicon Valley Spring Games were held on May 9 at San Jose's Gunderson High School. Athletes competed in tennis, swimming and track and field with gold medal winners advancing to the 2009 Summer Games on June 26-28 at UC-Davis.

This was council 8747's first year to participate in the Special Olympics and it was quite and exciting and memorable event. They were assigned to the aquatics as timers.

The aquatics are one of Special Olympics' original sports, and has been included in the Special Olympics World Games since 1968. Events are offered for all strokes, and relay events mirror those offered in other international swimming competitions. This event is such a joyful event I will be a participant for many years to come. See more Photos

Silent Retreat, Mar 18 - 20, 2011

By Tim Crews, , Silent Retreat Captain

What is a silent retreat? A silent retreat provides time to get away from the often hectic pace of daily life and give undivided attention to reflection and prayer. Retreatants enter into silence at the start of their retreat and remain silent (including meals) throughout their stay, except during conferences with their spiritual director and their participation in the celebration of the Eucharist.

The Silent Retreat weekend is usually scheduled the first weekend in March each year. However, the Northern California Bishops hold a retreat the weekend prior to Ash Wednesday each liturgical year and in 2011 that is the first weekend in March. Thus “Bishop Takes Knight” and we will defer to the Bishops and move our Silent Retreat to the third weekend of March in 2011. This date is coordinated throughout the state of California, and state officers and chapter members living in the Northern California area attend the retreat at the Il Retiro San Iñigo, the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos (JRC Los Altos). As the San Jose Chapter is the host location, the 19 councils in the Chapter are usually well represented at the retreat.

Each Grand Knight should consider signing up for this spiritual event. Please encourage members of your Council to attend this weekend with you. Many will say they are too busy with appointments, business, work, and family. It is exactly for those men that this retreat is an appealing item. Make an appointment to give yourself the gift of a retreat. Make it an appointment with God.

The cost of the weekend at El Retiro is $240. Accommodations are private rooms with private bath. Sign in begins at 5 PM on Friday, the cost includes a reception Friday evening, and all meals including dinner Friday, breakfast lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Each day has Mass, lectures and time for silent meditations. In additions Retreatants can meet privately with staff members for counseling, confession, and directed prayers.

This is one in a continuing series of articles on the K of C Silent Retreat Weekend. For more information, visit the retreat website at www.elretiro.org. No one will be turned away from attending. For scholarship support please contact Tim Crews (408/934-0874).
